WDRB Needs to Fix Their Balance

Over the span of three nights of watching WDRB, I have noticed that the majority of the stories that are aired fall under the category of social issues and human interests. On the WDRB website ( www.wdrb.com ), the stories often fit in the category of sports. As you can see, WDRB likes to include stories that the audience will enjoy. For some of the audience, this may be a good thing because this is what they want to hear. However, many people come to the news to find out what is going on in the world, not what they might be interested in. In Mr. Miller’s class, we learned about the ten elements of journalism. One of the elements includes making the important interesting. In this element, journalists have to explain what is important and balance what the audience wants to know and what the audience needs to know. A few days ago, a MS-13 gang member assaulted a Tennessee man with a rifle, bleach, and a plastic bag. This article is titled MS-13 Gang Member Convicted of Brutal Tennessee Assault With Rifle, Bleach, Plastic Bag, Feds Say , and it is found on the Fox News website. From reading the article, there are many of the 7 yardsticks that Fox News failed to meet. Some of these include context, explanation, and local relevance. The article from Fox News failed to meet the standard of context because there were no reliable sources. Context refers to how many sources a journalist includes in their writing, and a good journalist has multiple. However, this article only had sources in the form of quotes. These quotes came from the Assistant Attorney General (Brian Benczkowski) and Donald Cochran (Attorney of the Middle District of Tennessee). But still, quotes are not reliable sources. A good reliable source could be another website, book, or news source that you obtained the information from.

A Good Journalist and the 10 Elements: Class Discussion

“What makes a good journalist?” This is how our class discussion on the 10 elements of Journalsim started a few weeks ago. When Mr. Miller told our class that we would be discussing the 10 elements of Journalsim, I had no clue what he was talking about. I wondered if it was a term that all Journalsits knew, or only a select few. However, after walking away from our class discussion, I realize that the 10 elements of Journalsim are an essential if you want to become a good journalist. But what exactly is a good journalist? If you had asked me before high school started, I wouldn’t of been able to tell you. But I am now able to use my knowledge from this class discussion to piece together what a good journalist is. When the phrase “ good journalist” pops up in my mind, I automatically think of someone who is truthful, and is honest with his or her viewers.
