WDRB Needs to Fix Their Balance

Over the span of three nights of watching WDRB, I have noticed that the majority of the stories that are aired fall under the category of social issues and human interests. On the WDRB website (www.wdrb.com), the stories often fit in the category of sports. As you can see, WDRB likes to include stories that the audience will enjoy. For some of the audience, this may be a good thing because this is what they want to hear. However, many people come to the news to find out what is going on in the world, not what they might be interested in. In Mr. Miller’s class, we learned about the ten elements of journalism. One of the elements includes making the important interesting.  In this element, journalists have to explain what is important and balance what the audience wants to know and what the audience needs to know. WDRB does a good job of explaining the important stories, but they need to work on balancing the types of stories. For example, a few nights ago, there were nine stories that fit under the category of social issues and human interests, but there were zero stories on politics and government, and only one story about accidents and disasters (that includes both the TV show and the website). As you can see, there is a drastic difference between the number of interesting stories and important stories. The only thing that WDRB does to make somewhat of a balance is by adding in a long segment of business and economy stories that come one after another. From the same TV airing, there were eight business and economy stories that came on back to back in about a three minute time span. This segment always seems rushed because they are trying to cram in a bunch of important and newsworthy stories in a small amount of time. To fix this problem of balance, I think WDRB should spread out their important stories and put short, less important stories in the middle to give more of a balance to their show.
