WDRB: Do They Really Care About What Is Being Aired?

In Mr. Miller’s class, we are completing a TV News Project, and we are responsible for logging stories that appear on a local news station every other day. I have been watching WDRB for a few days, and I have noticed that their main focus is filling up time, rather than focusing on the content that they are showing. For example, a few nights ago, there was a story about a man proposing to his girlfriend at a Halloween party (www.wdrb.com/clip/14665736/man-proposes-to-girlfriend-during-halloween-party-in-southern-indiana). The story on TV included things like what costumes they wore, details on what happened, and they even included that the parents were sitting in a car, waiting for the proposal to happen. First of all, this story is not newsworthy. The Journalism Yardstick of newsworthiness states that a story is worthy if it affects a large amount of people for a long time. Obviously this is going to impact the people getting married for a long time, but is anyone else really affected by this? No. So why should this be included in the show, if no one really cares about it? I also noticed that this story included really random details about the proposal. I don’t think we needed to know what the parents did when this happened. It seems like they were stretching the story out to fill time. The day that this story aired, I did notice that it was a slow day for the news station. There were only a couple of really important and newsworthy stories, but other that that, everything seemed like it shouldn’t of been on the news. There were stories about what Halloween candy was the most popular, rotting pumpkins, and Halloween safety. All of these stories aren’t worth making the news, and I think they were just included to make sure their show filled up the entire 45 minutes that they had. I think that there needs to be a change in how WDRB fills up time. Instead of adding multiple short stories that aren’t important, they could make the important stories longer and more detailed. That way, stories like the proposal story will not be included in the news anymore.
